The No-Cash Allowance: A Practical Guide for Teaching Your Children How to Manage Money (Mom's Choice Award Recipient)

The No-Cash Allowance provides a real-life, hands-on financial experience that kids will not get in school. Lynne Finch, award-winning writer and author, gives parents an easy-to-use method for kids to develop money management skills. She shows parents how to help kids learn to make financial choices that will help them become financially independent when they become adults.
In today's economic climate with financial bailouts and stimulus plans, it is even more important for our kids to grow up to be financially independent as adults. Kids who learn to manage money will be able to survive in an uncertain financial future. Parents who help their kids learn financial literacy and competency through hand's-on practice at home will not need to bailout their kids when they become adults, thus protecting the parent s own savings and retirement funds. Charts, tables and illustrations show how children can track all their money in their account initially kept in the home with parents acting as bankers. Children from pre-school through high school can practice concepts of debit cards, ATMs, electronic transfers and credit transactions using their own money. Examples of dialogue between parent and child create a picture of real-life situations.

Semla--a traditional Swedish treat for this time of year. They bake a sweet bun and then cut it so there's a top and a bottom. You pick out the center of the bottom, mix the contents with marzipan, milk, and some other yummy things, and fill the empty bottom with the mixture. You put whipped cream on top of the mixture, and then top the whole thing with the lid and powdered sugar. This is only eaten during this time of year because in Swedish history, they would use this treat to fatten up before taking a fast leading up to Easter. It's the annual allowance of the ultimate calorie bomb!

John Boyd Orr looks at the Ration

“The Director General Looks at the Ration. Sir John Boyd Orr, whose task as chief executive of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization is to meet the world’s need for food, faces a typical European meal. Here before him are bread, a bit of margarine, cabbage and a potato, 600 calories out of a day’s allowance of 1800 – nothing to smile at, nothing to build health and strength.”
